The quest for safe, secure and sustainable provision of electrical energy poses one of the most critical challenges of our age. David Klaus and I founded Applied Superconductor Ltd. in 2004 to be part of this.
Our strap line “Current Solutions for Future Networks” actually tells you what we do.
We are dealing with the very high currents that flow when short circuits occur and which have become one of the limiting factors to building the Smart Grid. The good news is that we have solutions ready for networks under stress now. But our technologies will also allow a radically different, more efficient and more affordable design of future networks.
The connection of new distributed generation together with the closer meshing of distribution and transmission networks increases the fault current to critical levels. With conventional solutions either being inefficient, too slow, too expensive or all of the three, we have proven in a number of installations that our Fault Current Limiters are not only technically but also commercially viable alternatives.
In July 2012 we acquired limiter technology and key personnel from Zenergy Power which gave us control over the leading Fault Current Limiter solution. We are further partnering with developers of other limiter technologies with to deliver to our customers the optimum solution for their specific fault level problem.
Applied Superconductor has a strong culture of innovation which means that as well as optimising our Fault Current Limiter offering, we will also move into new areas such as DC networks and marine applications.
I am particularly proud of the team of industry experts who have joined us over the years because it is my strong belief that with the right crew one can weather all storms. It is them who give Applied Superconductor the requisite skills and experience to provide our customers with expert solutions.
